Volvo Buses has introduced a cutting-edge digital instrument cluster as part of the driver’s workspace in its global coach platform, enhancing user experience and safety for operators. The fully digitalised cluster, designed in collaboration with Human Machine Interface (HMI) engineers, offers drivers an intuitive and streamlined interface, all navigated via new steering wheel controls.

Dan Frykholm, Head of Design at Volvo Buses, emphasized the challenge of integrating advanced digital functionality while maintaining Volvo’s trusted and familiar aesthetic. “The goal was to create a cohesive design that feels intuitive and comfortable for drivers, ensuring they feel at home in this new digitised environment,” Frykholm explained.

The digital instrument cluster is one of the first of its kind in the coach market, offering two display modes: Analogue, for a traditional look, and Focus, which minimizes distractions. All functions are accessible through newly designed steering wheel controls, which feature intuitive Volvo icons and shortcuts.

Philip Gates, UX Designer at Volvo Buses, highlighted the importance of user studies in the development process. “By involving drivers and customers from different markets early on, we were able to identify pain points and continuously refine the design,” Gates said. “The result is a more user-friendly experience that evolves with the needs of drivers.”

In addition to the digital display, Volvo has introduced a unique neck tilt function in the steering wheel, allowing for ergonomic adjustments that reduce strain on the neck and back.

The new features underscore Volvo’s commitment to creating a better and safer driving environment, blending technology with user-centered design.
