On World Biofuel Day 2024, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) reaffirms its dedication to sustainable mobility and carbon neutrality. With a focus on a comprehensive approach to clean and green vehicle mobility, TKM is advancing its efforts towards achieving Net Zero Carbon in manufacturing operations by 2035, as outlined in the Toyota Environmental Challenges 2050 (TEC 2050) framework.
India’s Energy Context: India, the world’s fastest-growing large economy, is experiencing rapid increases in fossil fuel consumption and imports. Crude oil imports reached their third-highest level on record in April 2024, with 21.4 million tonnes imported for the month and a total of 232.5 million tonnes in the 2023-24 fiscal year. The transport sector, responsible for about 50% of oil demand, significantly contributes to this trend and its resultant carbon emissions. A swift transition away from fossil fuels is imperative to address these challenges.
Advancing Biofuels and Clean Technologies: Biofuels, particularly ethanol, are crucial in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and advancing towards a greener future. India’s abundant renewable resources, including sugarcane, food grains, and biomass, present significant opportunities for biofuel production. Ethanol derived from these resources can substantially replace fossil fuels, addressing energy security and lowering carbon emissions.
India has already seen progress in ethanol blending, with the blend reaching 15.90% in June 2024. The target of 20% blending by 2025 is set to reduce gasoline consumption by 86 million barrels and decrease carbon emissions by over 20 million metric tonnes. The introduction of Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) and Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV-SHEVs) will further enhance these benefits by increasing the use of ethanol blends.
Toyota’s Innovations: In line with its sustainability goals, TKM has unveiled the world’s first BS6 Stage II Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle. This vehicle combines a flex fuel engine with an electric powertrain, offering the lowest well-to-wheel carbon emissions. Such innovations are critical for achieving carbon neutrality and supporting India’s environmental and economic objectives.
Statement from TKM: Mr. Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Governance at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, stated, “Biofuel, particularly ethanol, plays a crucial role in reducing fossil fuel dependence and enhancing India’s energy security. At TKM, we are committed to sustainable mobility through a multi-technology approach, including Flex Fuel Vehicles and Flex Fuel Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicles. Our aim is to drive progressive innovations and provide ‘Mobility for All,’ ensuring no one is left behind.”
Participation in SIAM International Conference: Today, TKM participated in the SIAM International Conference, themed “The Biofuel Revolution in India: Fuelling Tomorrow.” The conference addressed biofuel demand and supply management, preparing the auto industry for a biofuel future, and developing a robust ecosystem for biofuel adoption. The event featured discussions with government officials, industry leaders, and global experts, emphasizing the importance of multiple energy pathways in achieving carbon neutrality.
