The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is lending €20 million to Allego, a leading European charge point operator, to finance the construction of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Poland. This funding will support Allego’s efforts to decarbonise the Trans-European Transport Network with backing from the CEF-Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility.

Allego, which currently owns and operates 35,000 public charging ports across 16 European countries, plans to install and operate 200 light and heavy-duty EV charging points at 50 locations throughout Poland. This initiative is part of Allego’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in European markets.

Accelerating the adoption of electric mobility, particularly electric vehicles, is crucial for achieving the European Union’s decarbonisation goals for road transport, a sector responsible for a significant portion of global CO2 emissions. However, substantial investment in charging infrastructure is necessary to facilitate this transition, especially in countries like Poland, which currently lags behind its EU counterparts in EV penetration and the availability of charging stations.

Allego’s role as a European charge point operator involves connecting charging points to power grids, as well as installing, maintaining, and operating these stations. The company also manages smart charging and billing, ensuring a seamless experience for EV users.

The EBRD, a leading institutional investor in Poland, has a long history of supporting the country’s development. Since beginning its operations in Poland in 1991, the Bank has invested over €14 billion in 532 projects. In 2023 alone, the EBRD invested a record €1.3 billion in Poland, further demonstrating its commitment to fostering sustainable growth and development.

The new EV charging stations funded by this loan will play a vital role in boosting Poland’s electric mobility infrastructure, bringing the country closer to meeting EU decarbonisation targets and promoting a greener future for road transport.
