The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to enhance last-mile connectivity by adding over 1,100 electric three-wheelers to its fleet. According to an official, 1,183 e-autos out of the 2,299 permits issued by the Transport Department have already been registered.
These e-autos will operate at around 40 DMRC stations, each equipped with charging points and dedicated parking spaces. The remaining 1,116 e-autos are anticipated to be registered by the end of August.
Currently, e-autos are available at metro stations in areas such as Chhatarpur, Dwarka, Rohini, and northwest Delhi. The permits for these e-autos have been granted to authorized operators at these locations.
An additional 1,116 e-autos are expected to be registered by the end of August. This includes 779 general electric autos as well as 337 specifically for women drivers.
DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar emphasized the importance of last-mile connectivity for metro users. While he welcomed the Delhi government’s recent introduction of a bus service to improve last-mile connectivity, he noted that the size of buses might not be suitable for all metro stations.
According to Kumar, in an interview with PTI, making sure commuters have transportation options for the final leg of their trip (from the metro station to their destination) is a critical challenge for the Delhi Metro.
Discussing the e-auto service, Kumar highlighted the benefits of e-autos over buses.
Kumar explained that while buses are big and might not be the best fit for every metro station, e-autos are much more agile and can navigate tight spaces more easily.
He also elaborated on the collaboration with companies to supply and operate the e-autos according to DMRC’s requirements.
To improve last-mile travel, we’re teaming up with companies to provide and manage e-autos that meet our standards and operate within our network.
