The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued two new guidelines to improve the safety of electric vehicles in the L, M, and N categories. The L category pertains to two-wheelers, while M and N apply to four-wheelers and goods trucks, respectively. These new standards, IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, target key components of electric cars, buses, and trucks, with a particular emphasis on the powertrain, which comprises the motor and transmission.

These standards are crucial for advancing a more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and efficient transportation system in India. “These standards guarantee that the vital components of electric vehicles—the powertrain—comply with rigorous safety regulations. Additionally, they emphasize the safety and performance of batteries, ensuring they are both powerful and secure,” stated the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution in an official announcement.

With the introduction of these guidelines, India now has 30 domestic standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems. As the popularity of electric vehicles grows beyond cars and trucks, BIS has also introduced IS 18294: 2023, which sets safety standards specifically for vehicles like e-rickshaws and e-karts. These rules ensure that these vehicles are built and operate safely, protecting both drivers and passengers.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s National Standards Body under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. It plays a major role in the formulation, recognition, and promotion of Indian Standards and assists industries in upgrading the quality of their products and services.
