In a display of collaboration and competition, Subaru, Mazda, and Toyota joined forces for the Multipathway Workshop, showcasing their latest advancements in engine development for the electric era.

Following opening remarks from the CEOs, a spirited exchange unfolded as each company’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) presented their revolutionary engines. This wasn’t just about efficiency; it was about a passionate “rebirth” of internal combustion engines (ICEs) for a decarbonized future, each company drawing on its unique strengths.

Subaru Focuses on Identity and Efficiency with Next-Gen e-BOXER

Subaru’s CTO, Tetsuo Fujinuki, acknowledged the brand’s signature horizontally-opposed engines might not be the most efficiency-focused design. “But what would Subaru be without them?” he asked, highlighting their commitment to this defining characteristic.

Their solution? The next-generation e-BOXER, a horizontally-opposed engine hybrid system designed to enhance both brand identity and fuel efficiency. Unlike the current e-BOXER’s parallel configuration, this new system utilizes a series-parallel hybrid layout. This allows the engine to directly power the vehicle under certain conditions, while also offering the potential for significant fuel economy improvements.

The key to this system lies in its compactness. Subaru’s engineers have managed to fit the differential, twin motors, transmission, transfer case, and even the power control unit (usually placed near the fuel tank) into a remarkably small package, nestled behind the engine. This not only saves space but also allows for a larger fuel tank, ensuring excellent cruising range.

Collaboration and Competition: A Future of Innovation

Beyond the e-BOXER, CTO Fujinuki hinted at further collaboration with Mazda and Toyota on developing carbon-neutral fuels. He also teased the upcoming introduction of a new vehicle in the Super Taikyu series – the High Performance X Future Concept – a testament to the spirit of friendly competition that fuels innovation within the three companies.

Subaru’s next-generation e-BOXER marks a significant step forward, demonstrating their commitment to both their heritage and a sustainable future. With production slated to begin this fall, the wait to see this innovative hybrid system on the road won’t be long.
