As the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg marks its 30th anniversary this weekend, Volkswagen extends heartfelt congratulations to the museum it helped establish shortly after Germany’s reunification. Volkswagen Group was a major founding partner, enriching the industrial city with a world-class art institution dedicated to global exchange and regional inspiration.

In the 1990s, numerous contributors worked to create an institution that would become a global player in the art world. Hans Dieter Pötsch, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Volkswagen Group and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Kunststiftung Volkswagen, praised the museum’s achievements: “We are grateful for the remarkable work over the past years that has exceeded the founding concept’s ambitious goals. We look forward to more momentous exhibitions and programs.”

Over three decades, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg has hosted powerful exhibitions, including “The Wolfsburg Project” in 2009 and James Turrell’s largest-ever museum installation. Recently, the museum’s innovative project “Re-Inventing Piet. Mondrian and the Consequences” won the ART Curator Award for the best exhibition in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The museum’s collection now exceeds 1,000 artworks, regularly showcased on-site and loaned to museums worldwide.

The museum’s significance extends to the Wolfsburg region, providing local audiences with access to world-class art and drawing visitors to a vibrant cultural city. To enhance arts and culture participation, the Kunstmuseum and Volkswagen are collaborating on several programs:

  1. Volkswagen Group Art4All: On the last Wednesday of every month, guests enjoy free museum access from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., with workshops, guided tours, concerts, performances, and artist talks.
  2. Young and Free: Since January 2024, Volkswagen has enabled free daily access for children and teenagers under 18.
  3. Volkswagen Group Fellowship Program: This autumn, the museum will welcome its first Volkswagen Group Fellow to support young academics in art and culture.

Benita von Maltzahn, Director of Cultural Engagement at Volkswagen Group, emphasized the importance of cultural mediation: “We are committed to bringing artists’ ideas and perspectives to as many people as possible. This forward-looking educational approach has driven the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg from its inception.”

Additionally, the “Artmobil,” supported by Volkswagen Financial Services, has transported over 100,000 young people from the greater Wolfsburg region to the museum over 21 years, offering professional education and workshops tailored to the exhibitions.

As the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg celebrates its 30th anniversary, Volkswagen looks forward to continued collaboration and cultural enrichment for the Wolfsburg community and beyond.
