Uber, the leading ride-hailing app, has been granted an aggregator license by the Transport Department of the Delhi Government to run buses under the Delhi Premium Bus Scheme.
Delhi is the first state to issue a license for bus operations under this scheme, and Uber is the first aggregator to receive it. Customers can now pre-book seats on their chosen routes using the ‘Uber Shuttle’ option on the Uber app.
The official launch of Uber Shuttle, a bus service designed for daily commuting, follows a pilot program in Delhi NCR and ongoing operations in Kolkata under an MoU with the West Bengal Government since last year.
Using Uber’s global expertise, Uber Shuttle aims to offer tech-optimized mobility solutions with private bus fleets, helping to alleviate road congestion and lower carbon emissions through shared rides, according to the company’s media release.
Uber Shuttle will provide air-conditioned buses on predefined routes, linking business districts with residential areas in Delhi. Commuters can pre-book seats up to a week in advance, track the live location and route of the bus, and view its expected time of arrival (ETA) via the Uber app. This ensures a seamless and convenient commuting experience with cashless payments and 24/7 safety support from Uber, including access to a Safety Line, as stated in the release.
An official from the Delhi Transport Department commented, “The Government of Delhi is committed to enhancing public transport services and diversifying transportation options to improve commuting for Delhiites. We are pleased to allow Uber to leverage its global experience and technological capabilities to enhance the commuting experience for the people of Delhi.”
Amit Deshpande, Head of Uber Shuttle in India, said, “We aim to address the mobility needs of every Indian, and buses are a crucial addition to our existing product lineup. After a successful pilot program with high demand for buses, we are excited to officially introduce the convenience of Uber rides to buses in Delhi. Aligned with Uber’s global sustainability goals, Uber Shuttle will increase ride-sharing, reduce traffic congestion, and lower the carbon footprint. This initiative provides a new option for commuters and creates new livelihood opportunities for drivers, making it a win-win for everyone.”
Each Shuttle vehicle will accommodate between 19 and 50 passengers and will be operated by local fleet partners using Uber’s technology, the release added.
