In a major stride towards sustainability, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced today that it will integrate low CO2 emission aluminum parts, made from green or recycled aluminum, into its new and existing vehicle models starting from fiscal year 2024. This initiative marks a significant step in Nissan’s mission to achieve carbon neutrality across its vehicle lifecycle by 2050.
Advancing Carbon Neutrality
Aluminum, comprising approximately 10% of a vehicle’s weight, plays a crucial role in automotive manufacturing. By transitioning to low CO2 emission aluminum, Nissan aims to substantially reduce its carbon footprint. Green aluminum, produced using non-fossil fuel-derived electricity, can slash CO2 emissions during production by about 50%. Recycled aluminum offers an even more impressive reduction, cutting emissions by approximately 95%.
Strategic Partnerships and Implementation
Nissan has been sourcing low CO2 emission aluminum sheets for vehicle panels in Japan from Kobe Steel, Ltd. and UACJ Corporation. Expanding this initiative globally, Nissan plans to use low CO2 emission aluminum for all aluminum components, including processed parts, in a bid to further decrease CO2 emissions.
From fiscal year 2027, all new Nissan models will feature low CO2 emission aluminum. Current models will see the introduction of green aluminum parts such as wheels, chassis parts, axle parts, and harness wires, starting in Japan, the United States, and Europe this fiscal year. By the end of fiscal year 2024, Nissan expects to replace about 20% of the newly mined aluminum used in car parts in these markets with green or recycled aluminum.
Commitment to Sustainability
Nissan’s sustainability efforts are central to its business strategy, emphasizing a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world. This transition to low CO2 emission aluminum underscores Nissan’s commitment to accelerating its environmental initiatives and contributing to a sustainable society.
A Vision for the Future
Nissan’s proactive approach in adopting low CO2 emission materials highlights its dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship. By setting ambitious targets and leveraging advanced technologies, Nissan is paving the way for a greener automotive industry and setting new standards for sustainability in vehicle manufacturing.
This announcement reflects Nissan’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable practices across its operations, ensuring that environmental responsibility remains a key focus as the company moves towards a carbon-neutral future.
