Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has revealed a significant collaboration with Asahi Kasei Corporation for the production of battery separators for automotive batteries in Canada. The two companies have reached a basic agreement and will commence detailed discussions with the aim of establishing a joint venture company by the end of 2024.
Battery separators play a crucial role in lithium-ion batteries, acting as porous membranes that prevent electrical short circuits while facilitating the permeation of lithium ions between cathode and anode materials. Recognizing the importance of establishing a robust supply chain for high-performance batteries in the North American electrification market, Honda and Asahi Kasei have come together to ensure the stable production of battery separators.
Under the terms of the agreement, the joint venture company will focus on producing separators for automotive batteries, specifically for electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured by Honda for the North American market. Additionally, the venture will supply separators to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The collaboration between Honda and Asahi Kasei will leverage their respective strengths in high value-added material technologies and electrification to produce high-quality separators for EV batteries. This strategic partnership aims to facilitate the production of high-performance EVs, thereby accelerating efforts toward carbon neutrality.
The announcement underscores Honda’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility solutions and contributing to the production of environmentally friendly vehicles. By collaborating with Asahi Kasei, a renowned leader in materials innovation, Honda aims to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving EV market.
As discussions progress towards the establishment of the joint venture, both companies are poised to combine their expertise and resources to produce separators that meet the stringent standards of quality and performance required for next-generation EV batteries.
