In a significant move towards sustainable energy adoption, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Hydrogen Division, announced the initiation of the Scheme for Pilot projects aimed at implementing Green Hydrogen in the Transport Sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).

The primary objectives of this scheme are manifold. Firstly, it seeks to facilitate the gradual introduction of Green Hydrogen as a fuel for buses, trucks, and four-wheeler vehicles on a trial basis. Additionally, the scheme aims to validate the technical feasibility and performance of these vehicles under real-world operational conditions, while also assessing their economic viability. It also aims to evaluate the effectiveness of hydrogen refueling stations and identify areas for improvement. Safety and security of hydrogen-based vehicles and refueling stations will also be rigorously demonstrated and evaluated under this scheme.

Implementation of the scheme will follow detailed guidelines outlined in the Annexure. The funding for this initiative will be drawn from the budget provisions allocated under the National Green Hydrogen Mission Head. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) will nominate the implementing agencies for this project.

This announcement comes as a strategic step towards reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards cleaner energy alternatives in the transport sector. The move aligns with the government’s commitment to achieving its renewable energy targets and fostering innovation in sustainable transportation solutions.

The scheme, sanctioned with the approval of the President of India and the concurrence of the Integrated Financial Division (IFD), is expected to pave the way for broader adoption of Green Hydrogen technology in the country’s transport ecosystem, marking a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy journey.
