In a groundbreaking move towards a zero-emissions mobility future, Uber has unveiled its remarkable strides in combatting climate change. The recently released 2023 Climate Assessment and Performance Report (CAsPR) reveals staggering advancements in their pursuit of sustainable transportation, marking a pivotal moment ahead of COP28.

The data showcases an exponential surge in drivers adopting electric vehicles through the Uber app, with statistics indicating a monumental shift towards sustainability:

  • A staggering increase of 2x in the number of zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) drivers, totaling over 74,000 active users monthly across the US, Canada, and Europe.
  • ZEV drivers completing nearly 2x more trips, surpassing 38 million zero-emissions trips through the Uber app compared to the previous year.
  • Impressively, ZEV drivers contributed 9.6% of on-trip mileage in Europe and 6.5% in the US and Canada, showcasing a notable increase from the previous year.

Moreover, the report highlights a substantial reduction in passenger carbon intensity, dropping by 25% in Europe and 11% across the US and Canada between 2021 and 2022.

Uber’s commitment to sustainability in 2023 has seen remarkable milestones:

  • Approval of 1.5°C aligned science-based emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative, solidifying Uber’s net-zero science-based target by 2040.
  • Introduction of innovative sustainability-focused features through the ‘Go Get Zero’ event, aimed at facilitating a seamless transition towards eco-friendly transportation.
  • Launch of ‘Electric Boda’ in Africa, promising a 30-35% reduction in running costs for drivers, expanding sustainable options globally.
  • Expansion of electric product lines and strategic partnerships, including a collaboration with Hertz in Europe, aiming to bring 25,000 EVs to Uber drivers.
  • Initiatives in India and Australia focusing on expanding electrification measures and securing partnerships for EV accessibility and charging infrastructure.
  • Collaborations in Latin America, such as teaming up with Tembici to offer bikes and e-bikes on the Uber platform, enhancing sustainable travel choices for millions of users.

Despite these remarkable achievements, Uber acknowledges the arduous journey to achieve zero emissions and emphasizes collaboration with policymakers, climate experts, and industry leaders to foster meaningful reductions in environmental impact. The company asserts its commitment to building healthier, more sustainable cities, affirming that the journey to sustainability requires collective effort and collaboration.
