Electric vehicle manufacturer Ola Electric has announced the start of construction for its 100 GWh gigafactory at its manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, India.

The company has erected the first pillar of its cell factory in Krishnagiri, marking an important milestone in India’s electrification efforts. Ola had previously signed an agreement with the Tamil Nadu government, committing significant investments for manufacturing electric vehicles, two-wheelers, and lithium cell gigafactories in the state.

The gigafactory, spread across 115 acres, is expected to begin operations in early 2024 with an initial capacity of 5 GWh. It will gradually scale up to 100 GWh, making it one of the world’s largest cell manufacturing facilities.

Ola’s CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, expressed pride in this achievement, highlighting the company’s commitment to making India a global hub for electric vehicles.

Ola has also made investments in cell and battery research and development, establishing an advanced facility in Bengaluru. As part of its agreement with the government, Ola plans to create an electric vehicle hub that will house manufacturing facilities, supplier parks, and a comprehensive ecosystem for electric vehicles.
