The government of Gujarat has reported a remarkable 1,475% surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales over the past two years, which can be attributed to the introduction of a new incentive policy. In 2021, Gujarat launched the Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy with the objective of establishing the state as a prominent manufacturing hub for EVs and related industries.

Since the policy’s implementation, the number of registered EVs in Gujarat has skyrocketed from 7,240 to an impressive 1,18,086, averaging around 8,858 new EV registrations per month over the past five months. Surat leads the pack with 31,561 EVs, followed by Ahmedabad (20,937), Vadodara (7,648), Rajkot (6,678), and Jamnagar (3,259). Among the registered EVs, there are 1,06,341 two-wheelers, 4,093 three-wheelers, 5,646 four-wheelers, and 2,006 others.

To support the growing EV market, the government of Gujarat is placing special emphasis on EV infrastructure development. The state is rapidly constructing EV charging stations in various cities, with plans to set up 250 new public charging stations. Currently, there are 152 charging stations operational across the state.

Collaborating with BISAG-N, the government aims to establish a uniform charging infrastructure and streamline the selection of charging station sites. As part of this effort, 91 hotspots have been identified in municipal corporations, 48 in municipal areas, 96 along state highways/national highways, and 15 at popular tourist destinations.

Under the 2021 state government policy, substantial subsidies are provided for EV purchases, including a maximum subsidy of Rs 20,000 for two-wheelers, Rs 50,000 for three-wheelers, and Rs 1,50,000 for four-wheelers. To date, the state government has disbursed Rs 133.83 crore in subsidies. This policy is set to remain in effect for four years, further fueling the growth of EV adoption in Gujarat.
