Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, T R B Rajaa, announced that the state is dedicated to attracting investments worth USD 6 billion in the electric vehicle (EV) industry within the next five years. Speaking at an event, Rajaa emphasized the government’s goal of creating 150,000 new job opportunities in the EV sector during the same period.

The recently revised ‘Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicles Policy 2023’ aims to incentivize and attract investors, bolstering the state’s thriving EV ecosystem. These remarks were made during a closed-door Roundtable Discussion on making Tamil Nadu the next global EV manufacturing hub.

Government officials, executives from major companies in the EV industry, and electric vehicle component manufacturers participated in the discussion.

The discussion focused on crucial aspects such as formulating strategies to establish Tamil Nadu as a prominent global player in EV manufacturing, adapting the existing automobile and auto-component manufacturing ecosystem to cater to EV manufacturers, and creating avenues for growth and entrepreneurship for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the EV sector.

In line with this vision, six cities, including Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Salem, and Tirunelveli, have been designated as dedicated EV hubs for development and progress.

Gopalakrishnan CS, Chief Manufacturing Officer of Hyundai Motor India, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Tamil Nadu’s vision of becoming a prominent EV hub in the country.

Hyundai believes that the forthcoming action plans will accelerate EV adoption while focusing on supply and demand equilibrium and charging infrastructure in the state. The government of Tamil Nadu has already unveiled the Electric Vehicle Policy 2023, which offers various incentives and benefits, setting a positive tone for future business opportunities.

The CEO-Ministerial dialogue provided an open platform for stakeholders to exchange their perspectives and ideas. Hyundai, a prominent automobile manufacturer, is fully committed to supporting Tamil Nadu’s vision of establishing itself as a leading EV hub in the country.
