Toyota Motor Corporation has started the sale of the all-new Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) model, the Z grade. This latest version of the Prius has been developed under the “Hybrid Reborn” concept, aiming to combine a captivating design, exceptional driving performance, and its core environmentally friendly characteristics.

The new Prius PHEV, offered as the Z grade, represents a high-performance variant equipped with the latest plug-in hybrid system. This system incorporates a compact, high-capacity drive battery, a high-output drive motor, and a highly efficient gasoline engine.

One of its key features is the ability to cover a majority of daily driving, such as commuting and shopping, using solely the electric power stored in the charged battery. This offers the quietness and responsive driving experience typically associated with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs).

For longer trips, the engine supplements the battery power, transforming the vehicle into a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) that ensures ample cruising range for worry-free travel. The combination of the motor and engine delivers a powerful yet comfortable driving performance as soon as the accelerator pedal is pressed.

Additionally, the new Prius PHEV introduces a unique external power supply system that enables the vehicle to provide power in various scenarios, including outdoor activities and emergencies. It features an external power supply mode that utilizes the car battery to provide electricity during leisure activities and an external emergency power supply mode that generates a larger power supply during blackouts and disasters by utilizing the engine to produce electricity.

Prius PHEV boasts a remarkable maximum system output of 164 kW (223 PS) of power, offering both enjoyable driving and impressive fuel efficiency. With 19-inch tires, it achieves a fuel efficiency of 26.0 km/L, while with 17-inch tires, it achieves 30.1 km/L. Depending on the tire size, the BEV’s driving distance ranges from 87 km to 105 km, representing a significant improvement of 75% compared to the previous model.

Toyota recognizes the importance of plug-in hybrid systems as a vital option in the journey toward carbon neutrality. As part of its commitment to providing a range of options to customers worldwide, Toyota is actively developing electric vehicles, including PHEVs, as well as hydrogen engines to achieve carbon neutrality.

The new Prius PHEV is built on the latest fifth-generation hybrid system and features a newly developed 2.0-liter Plug-in Hybrid System. It combines a compact, high-capacity drive battery and a high-output drive motor, resulting in exceptional dynamic performance. With a maximum power output of 164 kW (223 PS) and an acceleration time of 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, the Prius PHEV delivers impressive performance. Furthermore, it offers outstanding fuel efficiency, with ratings of 26.0 km/L and 30.1 km/L, depending on the tire size.

Prius PHEV includes a Regeneration Boost function, which enhances regenerative braking force for improved performance in situations that involve frequent acceleration and braking, such as mountain roads. The vehicle also features power generation and supply capabilities unique to PHEV models. It comes with a BEV external power supply mode that uses the battery’s stored electricity to provide an external power source during emergencies and blackouts. The system can provide approximately five days’ worth of electricity with a full battery charge and a full tank of gas.

Furthermore, the Prius PHEV is equipped with a second-generation solar charging system that efficiently converts solar energy into electricity. This solar panel, installed on the vehicle roof, can charge the battery during parking or even during blackouts caused by disasters. The electricity generated from the solar panel can be utilized for driving, air conditioning, and other functions, reducing the consumption of the drive battery.

The all-new Prius PHEV shares the same body design as the HEV model, with slight differences in shapes and color schemes to distinguish its uniqueness. The exclusive PHEV design incorporates sporty and dynamic 19-inch aluminum wheels, a metallic silver lower grille, and smoky gray tail lamps that highlight the vehicle’s technical advancements.

In terms of production, Toyota plans to manufacture the Prius PHEV at its Tsutsumi Plant, alongside other Prius models. The initial sales target for the PHEV model in Japan is set at 450 units per month, while the HEV model is expected to achieve a monthly sales volume of 4,300 units.

With the introduction of the all-new Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota aims to provide a vehicle that not only offers enjoyable driving and environmental performance but also becomes a cherished choice for customers for generations to come.
