Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath announced that the government will eliminate road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles purchased starting October 14, 2022.

The exemption will also be applicable for five years to the purchase of electric vehicles made in the state. The government has given orders to all RTOs in all districts to comply with the instructions immediately.

The revised notification by L. Venkateshwarlu, Principal Secretary, states that electric vehicles will receive a 100% tax exemption as per the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy, 2022. This applies to all EVs sold and registered in Uttar Pradesh between October 14, 2022, and October 13, 2025.

Additionally, in the 4th and 5th years of the period in the effect of the Electric Vehicle Policy (notified on October 14, 2022) states that from October 14, 2025, to October 13, 2027, a 100% rebate will be offered on EVs manufactured and sold in the state.

According to the definition given under clarification, an EV is any automobile that uses electric motors powered by ultracapacitors, fuel cells, or batteries.

The decision will currently provide relief for 3,997 owners of EVs in Agra, who were charged taxes and registration fees between October 14-2022.

There are currently 11,340 EVs registered with the Divisional Transport Office of Agra. Of these, 3997 vehicles were purchased between October 14, 2022, and now. This includes 30 cars and 437 electric rickshaws among other two-wheelers.

The exemption granted by the UP Government comes in addition to the subsidy provided for electric vehicles by the Central Government.

These reliefs, combined with those provided by the State Government and the Central Government, will reduce the cost for two-wheelers from Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 on-road, and cars up to Rs 1 Lakh.

The government’s decision will eliminate the distinction between the registration of EVs in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Rates will remain the same in both the state and the UT.

The policy provides for a 15% subsidy on electric vehicles purchased in the State.

This subsidy will cover the first 2 lakh of electric two-wheelers with a subsidy of Rs 5000 per vehicle. It can also provide a maximum of Rs 12,000 to the first 50,000 three-wheelers and Rs 1 lakh for the first 25,000 four-wheelers.

A subsidy of up to Rs 20 lakh per electric bus will also be provided for the first 400 buses that are purchased in the state.

Maximum of 1000 electric goods carriers will receive a subsidy at 10% on the factory price to purchase electric goods carriers for up to 1,00,000.

Government employees will be encouraged to purchase electric vehicles. The state government will allow employees to receive an advance.
