“If Elon Musk (Tesla CEO) is ready to manufacture in India then there is no problem … Come to India, start manufacturing, India is a large market they can export from India,” said Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
He added, “But if he wants to manufacture in China and sell in India then it cann’t be a good proposition for India.” Tesla still haven’t spoke about its plans to enter the Indian market after Indian officials denied the import duty cuts.
India is a huge market for electric vehicles. As per current regulations, imported cars under completely built units (CBUs) comes under 60%-100% custom duty which is dependent on the size of engine and cost and the insurance and freight value less or greater than USD 40,000.
Earlier, Tesla requested Indian government to cut down the 10% social welfare fee applicable on electric vehicles to 40% regardless of custom value.
