Pls Tell us about your Product and Services ? 

EMF Innovations designs and manufactures a wide range of DC Motors for various applications such as electric mobility, solar irrigation pumps, agricultural equipment and so on. We manufacture both outer rotor and inner rotor motors. The outer rotor motors are widely used in e-cycles and e-two wheelers as hub Motors and inner rotor motors are mainly used in e-three wheelers, solar irrigation pumps and other applications.

How has been the journey so far? How do you see your company evolving over the years?

We started out developing magnet-less DC motors, especially Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs). Along the way we realized that it would take some time for market acceptance of SRMs as compared to the ubiquitous Brushless DC (BLDC) motors, so we started designing and manufacturing BLDC motors in parallel to our SRM development. 

The BLDC motor business brought us face to face with tough pricing competition from Chinese-manufactured products. To overcome that, we have setup a semi-automated production facility to get the productivity of Chinese manufacturers, and also streamlined our production process to substantially reduce material waste. Currently we are able to produce BLDC motors slightly cheaper than imported motors for high volume orders.

What are the technological advancements that will happen over the time?  

We definitely believe in focusing on magnet-less motors. Our current focus is on continuously improving on torque density and power density. Torque density is achieving higher torque with less power, and power density is achieving higher torque by reducing the weight of the motors. In our SRMs, controller technology is also a key area of advancement. We will be working on improving the controllers to not only reduce costs but also increase the smoothness and reliability of operation.

What will be Post-Covid impact on the industry?

Covid-19 has led to a surge in interest in personal mobility devices. These consumers want a stylish, convenient and accessible alternative to public transport within cities, and we expect this trend to continue to grow even Post-Covid. Low speed, low power EVs such as e-Cycles and e-Scooters are a terrific fit for this need. This segment of EVs presents abundant opportunity to entrepreneurs to offer wide ranging solutions to disrupt the current way of intra-city personal travel.

How does EMF support Aatmanirbhar Bharat? 

EMF has taken the initiative to build one of India’s first BLDC hub motor manufacturing facilities, and the majority of our components are already indigenously produced within India. Our team works tirelessly to nurture local component suppliers to meet world class price and quality standards, and we are proud to say that our SRMs are already 100% made in India without magnets that will enhance the local eco system self-reliant on motor technology. We are also working on developing motors which have higher power density and torque density using ferrite magnets that are available locally. Our Idea is to grow local eco system with the complete local manufactured components.

In addition, we also believe that entrepreneurs can and will be the engines of social change, and there are abundant opportunities in the EV space. Thus we are working on a project to support and empower young people to create and launch their own enterprises, and through these enterprises, to take greater responsibility for their lives and communities. 

It is our hope that through these activities we will contribute towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
