German automaker Volkswagen AG will release its ID next-generation electric vehicles series in Japan as early as 2022, officials of a Japanese unit said Wednesday.

All-electric vehicles under the ID brand will travel up to 550 kilometers on a single full charge, according to Volkswagen Group Japan K.K.

The German company is accelerating its shift to electric vehicles worldwide. In Japan, the lineup of electric vehicles will be expanded.

Till Scheer, president of the Japanese unit, told reporters that the new models will be capable of traveling longer and more driver-friendly than existing electric vehicles.
